I just did an oil change on my 2009 R56 Justa at104k. I got the car with 94k, changed the oil when I got it and change it every 5k miles. I try to use factory filters and I use Mobil-1 0W-40. It did consume 1-2 quarts between changes but replacing the PCV spring and diaphram reduced that some. Upon removing the oil cap I noticed it had a white residue inside. There was also white residue inside the PCV vacuum tube. Upon removing the filter it seemed very dirty and there was what appears to be fine metallic bits in the oil in the housing. I connected a mechanical oil pressure gauge in place of the sensor in the head and on a 5-10 minute warmup saw 52psi at 800 rpm idle over 60 at 2000rpm and 80 by 4500-5000. the high end dropped off a little as it warmed up but stayed steady at 52 psi at idle. the car appears to run fine. has decent power for an N/A motor. averages 35mpg and doesn't smoke at idle or under load. One thing that bothered me but may be a separate issue is while checking oil pressure with the sensor in the head out I never got the low oil pressure warning. Whether or not the sensor was plugged in? Also since going through all this the car will now occasionally just shut off while idling or when coming to a stop. No rhyme or reason and never did it before. I'll try to attach some photos. If anyone has some insight on my situation I would greatly appreciate your input. I enjoy this car quite a it and need it to be reliable as I can drive upwards of 1000 mile a week for work.
So I had some time to dive into the top end and look for where the metal flakes are coming from. It appears the #4 Intake cam follower twisted in the guide block and tore up the intake cam lobe and the secondary cam lobe as well.
The motors got great oil pressure and ran well even with the bad cam. By my count I only need five valvetrain components besides the various seals gaskets and harware that may be required. The problem is while three of the parts being the cam follower, Guide block and spring don't even add up to $100. The Intake Camshaft and "Balance shaft" as it's called add up to $1600! Is there a source for Camshafts for N12 motors in the aftermarket. Can anyone recommend a used parts source. It could easily top $2000 to fix a $5000 at best car.
