Lightbulb 2004 MINI Cooper S MC40 & JCW - Very rare!

Year: 2004
Make: MINI
Model: Hardtop
Price: $4500
Mileage: 113000
Color: Red/White
Private or Dealer Listing: Private Listing
Location (Region): SouthEast

For sale is a 2004 MINI Cooper S with the Sports tuning package, factory installed MC40 appearance package and dealer installed John Cooper Works performance package. Like all Cooper S R53 models, car has the 6-speed manual transmission. Car currently has 113,xxx miles, is in good shape, and has been religiously serviced. Car has been garage kept the last several years. Located in Boynton Beach, FL, but registered in PA because transferring registration to FL is too expensive to justify (I previously lived in PA). I am the 2nd owner of the car, which I've owned and daily driven since 2012. It is not currently being driven, so the noted mileage won't change significantly.

This is a very rare MINI - only 1000 MC40s were made in 2004, as the 40th anniversary celebration model of the 1964 Monte Carlo rally win by Mini and driver Paddy Hopkirk. MC40 package included Chili Red body paint, white roof, chrome mirrors and trim, MC40 decals/magnets, special BBS R90 wheels, red/charcoal leather seats, glass fog lamps, carbon fiber dashboard, special shift ****, floor mats, number plate, MC40 voltmeter & oil temp gauge cluster, GB chrome decal on rear trunk. Of the 1000 MC40s made, very few also had the JCW performance package. JCW package came with upgraded supercharger, re-engineered cylinder head, tuned ECU, and upgrade exhaust. Will surely be a collector's model in a few years!

Modifications beyond original dealer installed Sport package, MC40, and JCW kit include:
  • JCW air intake (wasn't delivered with it, as it's an early -04 model)
  • JCW carbon fiber e-brake handle
  • JCW front brake upgrade
  • 19% reduction supercharger pulley
  • 2% overdrive solid crankshaft pulley
  • single-mass Valeo flywheel
  • upgraded South Bend clutch
  • Mishimoto solid core aluminum radiator
  • M7 tuning strut tower brace
  • Powerflex poly front lower control arm bushings
  • RS style interior door pulls
  • Aluminum coolant overflow bottle
  • All MC40 decals have been laid onto magnets, for easy removal. 99% of the time, the magnets are not on the car to protect paint, but are shown for sale purposes.
  • Leather shift boot
Recently serviced items:
  • Supercharger reoiled at 100k miles
  • New Bosch alternator at 100k miles
  • New idler pulley, tensioner, serpentine belt at 100k miles
  • New Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires at 105k miles
  • Royal Purple synthetic oil changes every 4k miles, w/ Mann oil filters, last one at 112k miles
  • Royal Purple 75w-90 synthetic gear oil change every 15k miles, last one at 112k miles
  • New clutch slave cylinder at 100k miles
  • New NGK Iridium quad-tip spark plugs at 100k miles
  • New valve cover gasket at 100k miles
  • Headliner recently recovered
  • New NAPA Gold battery replaced at 105K miles
  • Coolant flush at 105k miles, replaced with Mini/BMW genuine coolant
  • Low speed fan resistor replaced at 100k miles
In full disclosure, the car has the following imperfections worth noting:
  • Check engine light, due to Downstream O2 sensor reading out of range. Because sensor is downstream, it does not effect how the engine runs. Just needs to be replaced and code reset.
  • Parking brake light remains on all of the time, likely due to stuck parking brake switch or faulty switch Does not effect how car drives, as parking brake is not actually dragging.
  • DSC light comes on all of the time. Have not investigated why, doesn't effect driveability in regular conditions. Perhaps wheel speed sensor failure.
  • Crack in windshield from debris impact on highway. Will likely require new windshield, crack too big for Safelite to repair. (Thank you, I-95...)
  • MC40 voltmeter reads ~2 volts too high due to replacement and misalignment of gauge needle. Easy fix, just haven't had the time to fix it.
  • Minor rust around driver's rear tail light from someone else backing into the car in Walmart parking lot a few years back.
  • Front bumper paint faded from repaint by previous owner.
  • Just a few small dents and scratches from daily use. Dents could easily be removed with Paintless Dent Removal. Absolutely no crashes or collisions during my ownership, and none from the previous owner to the best of my knowledge.
The above items have already been taken into consideration when deciding on the price. They are easy to fix, I just have not had the time to deal with them myself. A/C blows cool, but requires a refrigerant recharge every year or so. Power steering system works fine. Car does not burn more than 1/2 quart over 4k mile oil change interval. Engine pulls strong and sounds great. Always had 93/92 octane fuel. Leather is in great condition, rear seats almost never used. Parcel shelf is not shown but will be included. Will also included box of extra parts, Bentley repair manual, and two Michelin Pilot SS tires with medium tire wear. Car has done a few autocrosses over the years, but never driven a real track day (as much as I always wanted to!). Responsibly driven and cared for by an adult.

While the car is not in perfect condition, it has been loved its whole life, and I am quite sad to be putting it up for sale. I had always told myself I'd be keeping this car the rest of my life...but life happened! Looking to sell to a new loving owner.

Hoping for a local sale. Cash or certified checks only, not interested in trades or crypto currencies. VIN is available upon request. Clean title in hand. Price is $4,500 firm. No test drives, but I will drive the car for you if requested. Not in a rush to unload, I'm willing to wait for the right buyer.

Private message me to ask questions and set up a time to see the car. Thanks!

Wow! For those wanting an MC40 this is an excellent value. The JCW package makes this one of 100 (JCW), out of 1,000 MC40s built. I wish this had been available when I bought mine (non-JCW). Good luck on the sale.

Your deal was a steal I bought my 04 base for $4,000 in 18 with 150k miles and maybe one oil change T.T I’ve probably spent another $2k in parts alone since.

okay. Can I use 75w-90 in my base model? Ordering 75w-80 is $31 for 2L and I have to special order it where the 90 gear oil is at Walmart for $9/L

How do you know theres 100 jcw's for the thousand produced? I have a JCW mc40 and a regular Cooper S mc40 and never heard of this. Curious if theres a published source backing that up.

Sourced from multiple Mini forums. As far as I'm aware, there's nothing unique to identify an original JCW MC40 version. The JCW carbon-fiber dash, for instance, is included on all of them. Since the MC40 package was dealer installed and not factory produced, it's entirely possible that the JCW version, which was simply a performance package, could be added to any MC40 by any owner at a later date. For instance, I could add it to my MC40 and claim that it was original when it wasn't. Bottom line, it's generally accepted in the Mini community that there were only 100 JCW MC40s produced but there's no definitive way to prove it that I'm aware of. Maybe someone else on this forum can respond with additional information.

There were zero JCW MC40 produced ... the JCW Engine Tuning Kits were dealer installed

Go back and re-read the post before you decide to troll. There were MC40s produced with the JCW package. But, as I mentioned in the post, they were dealer installed.

I don't think MINIAC is trolling.

The winky means ; ) sarcasm yes?

Referring to the sometimes fiery debate of factory vs. dealer JCW kit I'd reckon.

See here for example of arguments:

I love those wheels. I have the same wheels on my R52, and I don't think I have seen a set of wheels on a MINI that I like more.
