My new wheel gets here tomorrow. My local shop quoted me $195 for the install. I installed a new wheel on my R56 a few years ago, and I didn't even disconnect the battery. It wasn't that big a job. I know how to disconnect the battery, and there is only 1 screw in the middle of the wheel once you get the airbag off. The problems on the install seem to be: (1) removing the airbag - 3 holes in the back of the wheel where you insert a T25 screwdriver, but I'm not familiar with how the spring clips operate; and, (2) I don't have a torque wrench for the install. I didn't use one on my R56, but I really don't want to screw this up. On the other hand, $195 for this install really seems like a lot. Anybody swapped out their wheel and have any advice on this? Thanks
That seems to be pretty normal for dealer pricing. I had the same concerns as you and I even tried to tackle it myself, couldn't for the life of me get that damn airbag off. Tried for 2 days then I just gave into the dealer and had them do it.
So, you need to disconnect that battery and wait a few minutes to ensure the airbag power is discharged. As you say, three holes. take a look at your new wheel to get an idea of the angle for the clips. Turn the wheel as you go to get it at the 6 o'clock position to give plenty access as you will be fiddling with the screw driver until it unclips which has a knack to it. All three done, airbag comes off. T wrench, your choice, you must know someone with one?
