Rein harmonic balancer self destruction R56 Cooper S
Luckily this happened in my driveway. I heard a weird noise, battery light came on, AC stopped working. I pulled into the garage and found the serpentine belt destroyed and wrapped around the AC pulley, the alternator etc.
This is a Rein AVV0660{#11237562801, 11237622909, 11237638551} unit with maybe 3-4000miles at most on it I got from Rock Auto. The rubber separated from the pulley.
Yep, checked video after I replied. Was going on the pic.
I will need to check mine, also a Rein, replaced about 6 months ago!
Are all the other pulleys rolling smoothly?
ya man the other pulleys are all new. New AC compressor, new alternator, new friction wheel and the water pump pulley is also relatively new. (New motor installed last year).
While I have your attention, does your pulley do this:
That's the OEM pulley with 155k miles on it which I put on after the Rein self destructed. The REIN also looked "wobbly" too. The motor is new and the bolts and threads in the crankshaft hub are clean and I carefully seated it by hand with locitite blue and then torqued to 20.6 ft lbs with a high quality torque wrench.
I recall a little bit of wobble, not as much as yours, though.
Looking closely, the outer face of that pulley, just before the 10 second mark, looks pretty smooth. The inner face looks like it has the wobble.
Not sure that should happen, they should be parallel, so check that inner face, and make sure the rubber is not sticking out a little, making it appear to wobble.
Ya, its hard to tell if its the rubber or the metal pulley. Ive been worried about this since I put the new engine in. Ive taken it (the original) off twice to make sure it was in flush and even bought that new Rein unit but then the Rein self destructs and Im not sure why. Bad quality or something else? Bad hub? Poorly installed hub from factory?
The AC unit is brand new but it turns smoothly by hand, clutch and pulley. Everything else is new as well but the AC compressor was just put on 2 weeks ago.
