Newbie owner needs help diagnosing idler, tensioner, or belt noise....

I am the happy new owner of a 2007 6 speed non turbo 1.6 with 140k. I just replaced the thermo housing due to leak, that is all good.

I am very happy with its performance and just what I need for my very long commutes, plenty of pep at speed with those 6 gears.

On to the problem I have currently:

There is a loud squelling noise coming from passenger side, it changes tone with revs. I took off front tire and inspected, all looks normal. I took some spray lubericate to the two roller bearings ( idler??) and that seemed to quiet the noise for a few minutes. I am pretty sure it is one of the bearings/devices that the belt turns around , I think one is called a tensioner?

I actually know alot about cars in general, but when I go to seach on youtube or google, I cant seem to find alot of info for this car, its more for the turbo version.

Due to time and convenience, and the practical aspect that more then one part may be bad. I am seeking help on the tensioner/idler part numbers. I am willing to change out both (it there is both) in the hopes of eliminating the noise. I dont mine replacing parts not knowing for sure, its still cheaper then the dealership...

Thank you!

You're going to need two websites:

1. newtis.info will be your source for maintenance procedures, how things work, schematics an such.
2. realoem.com. Enter the last 7 of your VIN so you can find the correct part number for item you are replacing.

There are lost of good online stores to get parts ... fcpeuro.com (lifetime warranty), ECS tuning, and Rockauto.com are three I use frequently, but there are others.

Did any maintenance records come with the car? With that many miles, I'd look closely at all of the wheel bearings, shocks/struts, and all typical wear items. Don't forget to inspect your engine mounts.

Thank you for the advice.

I got some information, it may be bad, that said that I can change just the actually pulley wheel on both the tensioner and idler. Is this true?

Here is the pulley information:

Yes, and that looks like the right part.

If the squeeling is there while car is not moving, don't worry about non-engine parts. When replacing or inspecting tensioner / friction wheel parts, it's a good time to replace the belt too.

Thanks for posting that link! I have an old tensioner that only needs a new pulley/bearing. Now I'll have a spare.
