R52 base engine pinging / knocking

I am getting engine pinging on 2006 R52 (base engine) bellow 2000 RPM , no engine code, milage is 52K, all stock , no mods, replaced spark plugs, spark plug wires, air filter.

Any advise how to diagnose ?

A cheap thing to do is clean the MAF sensor. Mine was dirty & made the engine run lean. It threw a code though.
