R50/53 Ebrake light intermittently coming on
Ebrake light intermittently coming on
so i recently encountered a problem where my ebrake light will come on while driving, and then back off, doesn’t really seem to be affected by my driving, brake use, or bumps. And I’ve checked the ebrake to see if the switch was messed up and it’s working fine. Is there a brake wear sensor on the car or something similar? I did my brakes about 3 months ago but this just started.
Brake or Brake Wear Light?
Brake Light would be either the hand brake lever has lifted and caused the light to come on or the fluid level in the reservoir ... when the light pops on immediately reach down and ensure the hand brake is fully released (down) .. to check (when off) you can slightly pull up on the handle while depressing the thumb button until the light comes on and fully release it again. Check the fluid level, not by just looking at the level line on the outside but open the cap and look inside ... the reason why is there is a reservoir divider this ensure that if it were to leak it increase the chance that half of the system remains operational. (sometimes you see the level indicated on the outside but under extra scrutiny you will see that one of the chambers is low)
Brake Wear Light is just that, of the two pad sensors one front one rear it is sending a signal illuminating the light, a common intermittent cause is a corroded sensor connector contact, cleaning the contacts and putting a dab of dielectric grease on it when reassembled should solve that. Other possible issues are the newly serviced pads have a faulty sensor or improperly installed, if you serviced only the fronts or only the rears a few months ago the other end may need some attention now and the sensor is doing its job by letting you know.
Best of luck.
