Considering changing Amsoil oil grade- Opinions?

Thought I'd ask for members' opinions. I've been using Amsoil Signature Series 0W30 synthetic oil in my '03 R53 for a number of years and haven't had any issues at all. But I checked with Amsoil's Technical Service and they recommend either their European Car Formula Classic ESP 5W40 or as an even better choice 0W40. They said my mpg might drop slightly with the 40, but it offered more protection for my engine and the European formula was the best.
I have owned my MINI since October of 2002, have only about 87,000 miles on it, and want to get the best for it. I'm definitely staying with Amsoil, but would appreciate thoughts you may have about the grade switch.

I thought the owner's manual actually has a 30 weight, I think 5w-30, but that is just from memory.

You can always send a sample to Blackstone for analysis. But given the time or year and your location, I wouldn't worry about the 30 weight. In warm weather or under hard driving, a 40 weight might give a little better protection. So you can change weight the next time you do an oil change.

I personally like a name brand 0w-40 for most of my street cars; brand is always a matter of choice.

Regards,
Jerry

I use AMSOIL in all of my vehicles, including my daughter's MINI R50. I have used the Signature Series 5w30 and European 5w40 and noticed no difference between the two concerning the engine performance or sound. (No lifter tick or other noises.) I am in northwest Ohio, just south of Toledo, so we do see the same winter weather as you in Pittsburgh.

Having said that, I may try the European 0w40 European. I think that formulation is reasonably new as I've always used the European 5w40 in my E46 BMW.

Go Steelers!!

I've been using the Amsoil Euro 0W40 for the last few changes since it came out.
I like its specs and how it performs.

Before that I'd been using Mobil 1 0W40, but a couple years ago they changed the
formula on that and dropped the LL-01 certification from it, hence the change.
