Performace Mods and Reliabilty on 05 S

I have an 05 S with 198K on car 102K on the engine. I have driven the replacement engine for a couple months and it seems ok.
I've been offered a 15% reduction pulley, air box and Millet exhaust for a decent price. I am concerned about the reliabity of the 100K mile engine.
The parts are coming off an 04 S that blew up.

They also said I should get a metal coolant reserve to control the extra pressure on the coolant system as these mods make it hotter.
Any comments?

Your car has the Tritec engine, unlike the early Gen2s that have the N14 that many think is better as a boat anchor. Suggest you do some research here or via google (normally sends you back here) on modifying the Tritec. From everything I have ever read, the pulley upgrade should not be an issue. If you do not have a boost gauge you do not realize just how much the car is NOT in boost and therefore not exerting pressure/stress on parts that were designed to accept the pressure/stress.

The biggest issue on the Tritec is from not using premium gas that can lead to premature value guide wear. Of course if the previous owner was running sludge and not properly changed oil, the bearings and rings have seen better days.

You could take an oil sample and send in to Blackstone for testing to see what wear metals are present. I do that on my F250 (nearing 300k miles) and just did it on my 2006 R53 (nearing 160k miles) - at least will give you a starting point.

Pulley, air box and exhaust are pretty "safe" mods. While you're having the pulley done you might want to put on an ATI Dampener crank pulley (I got mine from Way Motor works) and have the belt and tensioner done at the same time.

If you are concerned with the condition of the engine and doing any power adders, you could just leave that stuff alone and just spend money on suspension and brakes.

Go for it those are all tried and true mods. If it's going to fail it will fail with or without those mods so no loss here.

The aluminum coolant tank it also a good idea as the plastic ones are very common to fail.

The crank pulley is also very common to fail so like he said the ATI will be the way to go for sure just to keep it reliable before it leaves you stranded.

yeah, I've put over 155,000 miles on one of these motors with no problems other than the crank pulley failing. The highest mileage I know of, without a rebuild, is 350,000 miles so your 100,000 mile motor should be just fine.
