Repaint Dash Trim

Greetings,
My current DIY hopeful project is to repaint my dash trim as well as replace my knee guards/protection with toffy ones. Replacing is the easy parts but I'm a little wary about the repaint. I've only ever painted homes or canvases but never plastic. Most sources online simple tell me to spray over it with two or three coats with additional two coats of clear. Also, some people lay it out in the sun per layer while others heat it through lamps. Being without lamps I suppose I'll follow suit. This is done so that the paint sticks better? Nevertheless, currently my trim is a checkered silver but i plan on painting it pepper white. I plan on getting 12 oz cans and I figure three should be plenty to go over the front dash, door trims, as well as the small triangular pieces in the back. Any tips?
