Brake upgrades
Brake upgrades
Hi Everyone i have a 2008 MCS that is going to need brakes soon and i am looking at options. i would like to upgrade to vented rear rotors and wanted to know if i can change my factory brakes to JCW brakes both front and rear?
can anyone tell me how much work is involved to do this? or at least give me an idea of what parts are involved? i currently have 17 inch factory rims so i hope clearance is not an issue.
is this a bolt on upgrade? do i need to change hubs and spindles?
any information would be helpful. thanks

why upgrade the rear brakes? They do LITTLE of the stopping ......
you can install JCW kits front and rear but I'll repeat my question, WHY?
MINI standard brakes are VERY over engineered. Unless you are doing 'track time' the standard brake setup is 'fine'.
However the standard setup is also DIRTY ..... a simple and step one upgrade is to change to a better pad. If you need rotors you can buy drilled slotted or other but in the MINI they amount to BLING for road use.
Pad choice however is worth some research.
I've been using EBC RED pads for quite some time now. They are low dust and work very well for me and the Mrs who do NOT race the car. I continue to use 'plain jane' rotors .... the fronts are vented and the rears are solid.
WAY has some good bundles IMO ....

to change the pads and rotors is a driveway job if you have the correct tools. I do a wheel/corner in about 20 minutes but I'm a damn old fart .... a basic brake pad/rotor should be around $150 and axle ... MY OPINION / EXPERIENCE / LOCATION
if you want to hang the JCW stuff it is not A LOT more but since you open the brake lines there ARE more steps .....

+1 to what Capt BJ said. I've been tracking my MCS for 10 years now with the same brakes it came with, only changing rotors when they go below the min. thickness. Get yourself some stainless steel lines, better pads and brake fluid like ATE Typ200. As for rotors, the standard, solid ones do fine. Don't go with drilled rotors...They just look cool but are not an upgrade. Slotted aren't much better. The secret to brakes is to use them firmly over the shortest distance possible, slowing the car down only enough to make the turn.
Sorry there is no vented rotor options for the rear as they are only 10mm thick so you can't make them vented.
And drilled or slotted options are just for looks as you won't see any braking improvement by spending the extra money.
You can upgrade to the JCW brake kit as it is a direct bolt on and does work great, while being reliable.

Otherwise like they said our brake package is great. And you can simply upgrade to our stainless steel brake lines too. These will also work if you later upgrade to the JCW kit

ok I think I need to explain a little. I an just looking at something better, but was not sure if it was a bolt on or if I need to change anything such as the caliper mounts. I like the look of the JCW brakes I have 5 spoke wheels on my 2008 MCS and like the look of the brakes through them.
I need to change my brakes not because they are worn out but because the rear rotors are warped I hoped that upgrading would not only look better but also keep this from happening. I am not sure if the rear rotors were machined down prior to me getting this car but for some reason they are warped and I do not race and I am not riding nor slamming on them. it just seemed that if I am going to change them I might as well look at upgrades. hopefully in the end I will not have warping issues later. I also understand the rear rotors may have been turned down before I purchased the vehicle and therefore they can warp easier. either way I need to replace them.
