Minimum wheel offset for R53 w/ 17" wheels

I am looking to purchase a set of 17 x 7 / 4 x 100 wheels with a 42mm offset.

The wheels coming off the car have a 48 mm offset. Will 42 mm offset fit over R53 Gen1 JCW brakes without using shims?

Thanks!

Might depend on the wheel style also.

Probably since that's like using a 6mm spacer on a 48mm wheel. What wheels are they? Maybe another member has the same wheels and can give some feedback about the fitment.

It may depend on the wheel, but we are talking about an offset difference of slightly under .25" with no increase in wheel width. The JCW brakes are bigger, but not that big.

I'd suspect you'd have trouble with the fenders before the brake clearance even staying with a 7 inch wide wheel.

They are R112 JCW Challenge "Copies". They are showing a 42mm offset.

I think any wheel with those specs wouldn't be an issue, especially replicas. The 1st gen JCW/R56S brakes fit behind factory 17's with a 48mm offset, and these give 6mm more clearance for the brakes. A lot a replicas are made with a more aggressive offset because it usually looks better. This way you just bolt on the wheels and don't have to deal with spacers. Also, the extra 6mm isn't really too aggressive so they'll probably work fine regarding the tires rubbing on the fenders, unless you go with an a bigger tire size than stock. Where you would really need to measure carefully for brake and wheel clearance is if you go with an aftermarket big brake kit, or the 2nd gen JCW Brembos.
