Which transmission?

Hey guys, a quick and random question... Who made the 6 speed transmission for mini gen 1 r53?

I'm trying to figure out if there are other cars which have engines that will directly bolt up to the 03 mini 6 speed. For example I think the beetle uses the same auto transmission as the mini.

Similarly, the viper, mustang, and Camaro all had the same exact transmission with a different bell housing. I'm kind of looking for something with the same exact bolt pattern. Does this exist?

i have my reasons for asking but would take too long to type on my phone. Thanks in advance

I think they are Getrag (sp) transmissions.

The R53 always had a Getrag 6-speed.
The early ones had slightly slower gear ratios than the later ones.
The R50 had a Midlands 5-speed until July 2004, when they
changed to a Getrag 5-speed.

My 2003 R50 had a Midlands 5-speed until August 2014, when it
bit the dust and I did the complicated swap to a 6-speed Getrag.

Awesome. Thanks guys, I forgot about getrag. They make transmissions for all German cars and the occasional Japanese and American car too.

Now, if I can only figure out if the exact transmission out of an 03 S can bolt directly to another German engine with the same bolt pattern, and potentially has more power than the current engine. Lol.

I have an 03 S, has a little work done, love the car to death but I don't want to spend 20 grand to build a reliable 300-400hp engine out of a Chinese cast iron block and machined head blah blah blah, when there may be something from vdub that already fits the bill stock.

I'm about to buy another daily driver and plan to get some kind of higher output German car, gut the front end and turn the mini into a mid rear engine car reminiscent of the old British rally cars. (Hot hatch era) I have the tools, ability, knowledge and experience to take on such a project, I've been building custom hotrods and frame up motorcycles for a good while now and am well versed in CAD (inventor solid works fusion rhino cinema4d etc) have access to CNC etc. But I'm still very much in the research phases while saving my money for such a project.

I've thought about a 24 valve vr6 turbo for this and finding a wrecked vdub at auction. But if something mates up to the existing transmission without an adapter, that would save me some money in the long run. And if it has more power than the existing engine that's a huge plus too. All I would need is the suspension, etc from a wrecked mini and could use some of what I have already from my current car instead of buying a whole VW Passat or golf or something and gutting the entire front end and having to worry about the tires sticking out the side of the mini lol. But, that just means I can put wider wheels on it haha.

Anyway, this will take me quite a while, but it's something I plan to do and am gathering as much info as possible in the meantime so I select the right items from the start. I've always been an American v8 kind of guy, so don't know much about what Germany has to offer. I guess for whatever that's worth an American 3800 v6 would also be a really good start as there are tons of available upgrades and some were supercharged, but most of those cars only came in automatic unless they were rear wheel drive like a v6 Camaro or firebird, gto and had a tremec t5 transmission. Or t56 in v8 models. That doesn't help me, I need 5 or 6 speed manual front wheel drive for this to work. I've even considered a Honda engine, but, it's a British car made by Germans so a VW motor to me makes it more pure considering the circumstances and BMW motors are notoriously impossible to tune after a certain year. Plus I don't want to spend more than I have to. There are tons of 400 to 700hp golfs out there running a stock block. As far as I know there aren't any 700hp r53's with the stock block roaming around. But maybe there are.

The Getrag gearbox for the R53 is G56-85BG-TBKA for early models,
-TBKE for later models, and -TBKL for later models with factory LSD.
All 3 of these bolt up the same way.
