Clutch question
Clutch question
This vehicle I purchased has 50K on it.
I slipped the clutch a little going up my steep driveway - and wound up smelling clutch.
Is this a sign it will need replaced soon. If so how soon.
Thanks!

Happened to me before driving in SF, sometimes it's inevitable. Does it slip on the highway when you give it a lot of throttle in 4th or 5th gear? That is more telling. The original clutch could go way more than 50k but it really depends on driving style. Did the PO drive alot of city miles or was it mostly highway commuting? No way to know, unfortunately, unless you knew the PO. If there's clear signs of the clutch slipping I'd say replace sooner rather than later so you're not stranded on the hwy or put in a potentially dangerous situation.
Yea, I smoked my clutch a couple times on a visit to SF. I found that holding a little hand brake (thumb on the button, dammit) mitigates the tendency to want to roll back taking pressure off the urge to fight the clutch.
I bought my 2009 JCW with 47K on it, and the throwout bearing started to go within 1,500 miles of purchase. By 50K the clutch was slipping, and I had it replaced at a local MINI garage for about $1,500.00 with the factory replacement kit.
I have a 2009 with 70K owned since new. About 12 months ago I was accelerating from a stop, got up to roughly 50 in third and felt/heard what I presumed was a slipping clutch. I wondered at the time if maybe I had some clumsy feet, but it happened again. Took it to the dealership for them to test and they thought I was bonkers. I was OK with that diagnosis as they quoted some silly price of $3K should it need doing.
I haven't had it happen since.
I don't have hills and know how to drive a manual...I consider myself a sympathetic driver.
What do you think guys? Are the first JCWs from 09 susceptible?
Thanks.
