What's the general consensus on leather seat care? I recently purchased this car and want to preserve it as much as possible. The leather is worn but not torn, especially on the drivers side bolster. Is there something you all recommend or is it best to take to a detailing shop and have them do the entire interior? I think for less than $200.00 I could get a full service detail, carpets, dash, leather treatment etc. Suggestions? Thanks

 

Meguiars has good product available at a lot of big box auto supply stores. Don't have leather in the car but me and my co-pilot's Stressless recliners get an occasional treatment with Gold Class cleaner/conditioner. Great stuff. It won't do a thing for the lost dye colored spots though.

try chemical guys leather cleaner and conditioner. I ordered from amazon. It is the best I have ever used.

It will helps , but if the finish on the leather is really really bad it will need redyed, refinished.

 

Check this site out: http://www.leatherique.com/ I've been using their products for easily 35 years. Their Rejuvinator Oil and Prestine Clean are outstanding. They also can match the color with a water-based, permanent dye that you can easily apply.

the colored leather on the GEN1 S seats was really poor quality. The outside bolster of my '02 - S with lapis blue looked very similar after just a few years. Maybe I shoulda made a warranty claim but I thought of it as wear and tear as it was my first experience with leather interior..

No conditioner is gonna get the color back. I kinda sorta minimized the appearance with a color sharpie applied to the bare leather .....

On the plus side, I also had leather on my 7-S and it NEVER showed this kind of wear.

For routine leather care I've used Meguires' product and Lexol ... and the stuff they sold me when I bought good leather furniture for the tv room ..... IME Meg's seems to be the best moisturizer and Lexol the best cleaner.

But another factor is the quality of the leather used. As discussed, the stuff used in early GEN1 cars was crap .... My current dd came with full leather Recaro seats up front from the factory. I have done NOTHING to them since the day I bought the car (3 yrs) other than dusting, vacuuming and maybe a damp cloth wipe. They look as good today as they did on day 1. I'm afraid to put anything on them for fear of screwing 'em up!

 

Yes, the seats were made by Lear for the Gen 1 MINIs and I think the leather and dye process was much different than my 07+. Which was more durable. I dont know if Lear made the gen 2 MINI seats but I think they did? Now my leatherette from my Gen 1 MINI looks like it did from 2005. It has really held up.

I have been looking for a matching leather dye for My MC40's Seats, no luck so far, but I'm sure I'll find it some time. I mention this because it is same color red.
