Model Years for R53

Looking for some clarification - I've seen references to the R53 spanning 2002 to 2008 - specific to the engine. However, other sources such as wikipedia list it only to 2006. I'm potentially going to have to replace my engine and am worried about going to year 2008 and ending up with an incompatible engine. What marks or identification info can be used to ensure it will fit my 2005 harness and ECU?

R53 up to 2006. R52's (convertible's) had the same engine and ran thrugh 2008.

So I'd have to get one from a convertible for it to work using 2008. Any idea if Canadian engines are any different?

If you need to replace your engine on your R53 you would need to find one that came out of a supercharged car ie R53 but not all R52's are supercharged so you would have to be careful if you are getting an R52 engine. Since there are more R53's out there i'd stick with that as a plan for a donor engine.

As you have an 05, it would be logical to assume that you look for only engines from 05 and 06 models as the earlier years had different transmissions and motor mounts. The R52 is the convertible model but unlike the R50 (no supercharger) and R53 (supercharged) the R52 can in base model and "S". As you have a R53 you need a supercharged engine. I would think a R52 S from 2007 and 2008 would also work.

I had a R53 and now a R52S, the engine compartment and interior appears apples to apples but I am not sure about ECU although I believe the harness is the same.

As far as Oh Canada, it would be logical to assume that other than the speedometer being the base kilos instead of our miles, you should be fine.

Do some more research here, should be plenty of info.
