Offset and tire sizes??

I know this question has been asked a thousand times, but i am not clear on details. I have a 2006 MCS with 4x100 17x7 stock rims. I am looking to change the rims to something nicer and lighter but I am not clear on the offsets that i can put on without changing anything. I would like to use the existing tires since they are practically new but if i can put a little wider i could just buy new ones to have an extra set. So my question is what are the limits that you can run as far as offset and tire width without rubbing or having to change suspension and brakes?
