RealNetworks in online music price war.

RealNetworks has halved the price of its music downloads in an attempt to boost its share of the online music market by undercutting its rival Apple.

Songs for $0.49 each, albums are $4.99.

Offer is for a limited but unspecified time, Real has an advertising campaign with the slogan: "Half the price of Apple. Welcome to freedom of choice."

I wouldn't put "Real" software on my computer even if they gave out music for free.

I've lived fine without RealNetworks' software on my PCs for a few years now, and couldn't be happier. Their players are now optimized mainly for delivering advertising and taking over just about every media playing function it can.

I will pay for downloaded tracks once I am given the ability to use them as freely as the CDs I own now. I am not holding my breath.
