Is the center-tunnel cross-member necessary?

I added a resonator to my exhaust system this weekend and ended up having to place it in such a way that it interferes with the cross-member underneath the car that connects both sides of the center "transmission" tunnel. I'm assuming it is there to add structural rigidity, but can anyone enlighten me on how critical this piece is? In order to add it back in I will have to space it out from the chassis an inch or two...

I've been running without mine for about a year and haven't noticed any issues. I had an interference with the resonator as well.
