09 MCS Climate Control

My father's 09 MCS is acting very oddly. While drivingin (happens when cold or warm) and the climate control is on manual (70 and 2nd fan speed) the display will get VERY bright, the heater will turn off and only blow cold, then a few seconds later it will go back to normal. This doesn't seem to happen while it is on auto mode.

Any ideas?
