breakin for new MINI S
hey, i'm still waiting on my 05 S....and it's gonna killllll me waiting to break it in...any words from anyone who has done it correctly...and hasn't? anything important i should know just to be safe....is it really just a bunch of garbage that i hafta wait 1200 miles??? well gimmie advice
Follow your manual's directions
You'll be safe enough if you allow about 200-500 miles for break in of the brakes, tires & clutch and 1250 miles for the engine. No higher than about 4500 rpm and vary your speeds/engine rpms. Up to about 70 mph on the freeway is fine (manual says 95 mph max!).
No full throttle or kickdown position for the accelerator
After 1250 miles then gradually increase rpm and speed within the limits of the road conditions and laws.

Changed oil/filter at 1300 miles to Royal Purple...Plan on changing again every 5000 miles. That 1.6L Tritec engine is small! My previous car was a 4.6L V8 Ford F150.

"This High Performance Derivative of Tritec's 1.6L engine was recently named by Ward´s Auto World Magazine as one of the 10 best engines in the world for model year 2003. The 16-valve, supercharged, 4-cylinder, in line engine powers the award winning BMW Mini Cooper S, delivering a modest 163 bhp at 6,000 rpm."

I broke it in like I do my motorcycles..varying acceleration up to 4500 and then letting off of the gas (still in gear) to put back pressure on the rings to help seat them both ways. That is on decel and acceleration. I changed to royal purple at 2,000 and used less than a pint in the next 8,000 ( with a lot of redline shifting) when I had the dealer change it at 10,000. Everyone has an opinion on this, so sort through and do what you feel comfortable with and ENJOY!!! Tim
