Hey I am in the market for an r53 and It has been a dream car since 2002 when it came out. I am just wondering what are some things to look for to make sure that the dream car doesn't turn into a nightmare? If there are stickys or other posts you can point me to that's awesome I just haven't been able to find very much. Thanks in advance. I am located in charleston SC.

 

Receipts, nothing tells the repair history better than documentation. Don't take word of mouth, I would also recommend taking it to a Euro specialty shop or local MINI specialist for a proper diagnosis. The first car I looked at only had 45xxx miles on it, but needed over $4,000 in work to make it reflect those low miles.

And for the love of all things holy, check there is oil on the dipstick. 2 of the 4 cars I looked at prior to purchasing my car had no oil on the dipstick.

Main failure points were:
Thermostats
Waterpump
Alternator
PS Pump
Lower control arm bushings
Strut mounts
Exhaust is probably going to be near falling apart
Rust on the #3 coil point, causing misfires
Crank pulley failure
Low speed fan resistor
A clutch may be due if the car is nearing or over 100xxx miles (depending on driver)
Crank sensor leak
Rust under the tail lights, over the boot handle, under the weather strip in the door moldings


The list could go on depending soley on where you are geographically located, but that is a pretty round estimate on what you'll encounter with near every car, unless previously fixed.

 

Go into the Forums section, 1st generation MINIs, Stock Problems / Issues. Tons of info but don't let it scare you away. Look for an 05 or 06 they seemed to have more of the bugs worked out. Avoid the CVT transmission. The 6 speed manual seems to be the best from what I've read. I bought an 04 built in 03. It's had a few issues and now I need a new supercharger but I would not trade my JCW for anything right now. Good luck and welcome.

 

It's pretty hard to really know what kind of shape the car is in just by looking at it. There are a few things you can check, but overall you never really know what you are getting.

If the owner has service records on the car...that's a good thing, but it still may not really give you much info.

I think that as long as the car runs and drives nice, and you get it for a good price (under book value)....you are good to go. Any used car is going to need some work, that's the fun part
