would clear the speedometer. has anyone installed a flip up stereo in their r50 before? is it as easy as replacing the stock stereo? any help is appreciated

The act of physically removing and replacing the stock stereo is easy...

The more difficult part is doing the wiring, from what the I can see from the images, It looks like the pop up screen should clear the speedo.

You might want to go ahead and pull the stock unit and take a look at it, just to give yourself an idea of what you are looking at.

Ive seen it done, it would just cover the lower part of the temp and gas gauge as well at the traction indicator.
