02 Mini Knocking sound near firewall upon acceleration
Hi Guys,
Real quick.
Got a knocking sound near firewall bottom as though cat is banging on acceleration. A friend will be checking out tomorrow by himself. Anyone have an issue similar to this? You always get a knock-knock (who's there?) when taking off. Feels like some thing is twisting. Motor mounts? Lower Control Arm Bushings? All have been replaced before. Maybe time to do Again.
We have 160,000 on the car. :-)

My first guess would be motor mounts.
Especially if they have never been replaced before.
But the lower control arm bushings are also a high probability, combination of age and miles make both of these suspect.
Motor on!

Unless your control arm bushings are completely toast, like dangerously bad, they're probably not the source of the knocking but you probably need to replace them anyway. I would look at your mounts first.
My mini has 165K and the control arm bushings are completely shot. If that is the case, you should check how fast your tires are wearing out cause mine wore out pretty quick before I noticed what's going on.
Could also be the CV axle joint cracking if it is worn out.
