Special chain noise no one else seems to have

Hi All,

I have been looking at NAM forums for a few weeks, if not months now, to learn more about the engine death rattle that has haunted a large population of the R56 owners community. I can ensure you I have done weeks of weeks of researching, but to no avail found anyone else with my problem.

My R56 has a very special noise. It is a chain rattling noise, that is only audible when the engine is WARM (second/third/fourth) startup after engine has warmed up. It sounds like a chain is hitting against something. It generally lasts for about 1-2 seconds, maybe 3 seconds tops. It NEVER makes a noise on cold start, never makes it if I apply throttle, ONLY on warm startups.

Yesterday I had a chance to speak with a fellow R56 owner, who recently had his whole chain assembly replaced. I reproduced the noise, and he had advised me that the noise coming from my engine was a lot more high pitched compared to his death rattle that he had previously.

I have visited my local BMW dealer for a thorough check, but all they did was add engine oil and said the issue was solved. On my second startup after collecting, it was still present. It was also a hefty bill that BMW had charged.

I would just like to know if anyone here could provide me with some insight into the problem I have at hand, your help is much appreciated.
