I was told by the dealer today that in order to do the brakes on my 09 R57 that I need a special tool for the rear brake calipers. The said tool he said cost $100+. Any input on this would be appreciated. Thanks

 

You can get it at Harbor Frieght for about 40 bucks.

 

Thanks for the reply. What's the name of the tool? I'm guessing with it, changing the brakes is a pretty easy/routine project. I've done the brakes on Land Rovers so I suspect it can't be too difficult.

Which you use to retract the caliper piston back into the housing. Wish I'd had it with my Miata, I resorted to needle-nose pliers for it...

 

That's the one you want. It has two tools, one for each direction, an improvement over the old tool--which I snapped in half. This one is built much stronger, it's a different manufacturer and of much better quality than the older tool (in other words, don't look for the older version used). If you've never used one before, check one of the rear brake DIYs, it'll help you out, but it's not that hard to use and since you've done brakes before it should be a piece of cake. One word of warning--make sure to get the clips on the backing plate of the piston side brake pad fully clipped--you want to slide it over the piston, bottom of the pad first. It'll make sense when you do it.

Many times they go on sale, or there is a HF discount coupon you can use on it. With the adapters, it'll work on most retractable piston brakes regardless of make.
