Oil change questions for '06 R50
hi all,
here's the background: I'm a chick that knows enough about cars to get herself in trouble and sometimes out of trouble. my father insisted that I learned to change the oil on my car at 18 but that was the last time I have done it. I have an '06 hyper blue R50 with 125k miles on it. Love the little blue something fierce. In the past, I have taken it to the dealership to get the oil changed. that was all fine and dandy until the price went from $75 to $130. The last couple of times I took it to a shop that specializes in European Autos. Figuring I could do it myself, I have proceeded on overwhelming myself with information. My husband is used to changing the oil in his Chevy truck but gets apprehensive when it comes to my mini because it's "European and temperamental."
LONG story short, what is the best synthetic oil to use in a R50 with 125k in the South? I know I need just under 5 quarts, I'm just at a loss on what brand and grade to buy. the numbers turn to Greek somehow. I do mostly short, in town drives with the quarterly (monthly during the summer) 300 mile trips to Texas.
I've read the tips and tricks about the whole process; ie, loosing the filter just enough to let the excess oil drain into the system, move the pan over just in case you miss some, lube the seal to aid in future removal and DO NOT over tighten the plug (which I made sure is OEM and ordered online).
I have also ordered an OEM filter due to some issues with aftermarket brands.
my little blue has a list of other issues but currently since the oil countdown is at -100, I'm thinking this is the priority.
thanks in advance for your patience, knowledge and assistance.

IMO buy mini branded oil is you are not sure...
Other option is Mobil 1 euro....it meets the mini specs...
Modern syenthics are so good in hot and cold temps....as long as the oil meets the engine makers specs...not much matter. The OEM branded oil is 5w30, the mobil1:is 0w-40....both fine...
Folks sometimes use other non mini/BMW tested oil but again that is up to you...any quality syenthic is fine, but Mobil 1 euro is cheap, sold in 5 quart jugs in Walmart pretty cheap....so IMO why chance it.
