Which Mini Cooper Convertible model/year should i buy

Hi Everyone,

I plan to purchase a used mini cooper convertible. I have done a lot of reading and my summary is that, the first generation (R52) 2008 W series base model (not the S) with manual transmission (to avoid the CVT) is the most rock solid option based on reported issues.

Does anyone agree or disagree?

What about the same but a 2007?

Thanks so much!

Differences are negligible between the 2007 and 2008 R52.

You need to consider that by 2007, the 1st generation hardtop (R50/R53) had already ended production and the R52 was also headed for termination. MINI wouldn't put effort into updating a lame duck product. The R52 stayed in production its final 2 years only because MINI wanted to keep a convertible in the sales lineup, but the R57 wasn't ready yet.

+1
However: R52 hands down. No timing chain/tensioner rattle and death, no carbon buildup/walnut blasting. Avoid the automatic gear box!!!
Use the search engine and be amazed at the more than 1/4 million threads and nearly 4 million posts. Everything that can and/or will go wrong with a MINI - everything that is fantastic about owning a MINI is to be found herein. Happy motoring!

Thank you rkw! Helpful and useful response. Would it be fair to say that this neglible difference includes the 2006 as well considering what you said about the last two years of production?

Thanks again!
