New Blog Post: Is MINI the new Porsche?

Two brands I love for their pursuit of speed and driving purity

The two brands may seem far apart but they are very much alike

Is Mini the "new Porsche"? I understand the point you attempt to make, but I don't think so, for lots of reasons, not least of which is that Porsche, itself, is making the new Porsche.

I think the car most closely analogous to the Mini is the BMW 2002. And yeah, I've owned a couple of Minis, a couple of Porsches and a 2002. The Mini and the '02 have several things in common, including (at least at the beginning) springing from down-market designs, excellent space utilization (something you can't accuse the P-car of having), an unmistakable shape and being an absolute blast to drive.

I want to comment on one other thing, however, and not just because this point appears in the above referenced blog post - I'm certainly not picking on its author. I know that BMW, in its questionable wisdom, insists that the BMW version is a "MINI." To that I say, balderdash. Anything in all caps is an acronym: Minimal Interior No Interest. Or something like that. This "MINI" naming convention is purely a marketing conceit perpetrated by marketing types who have no freakin' idea what they're doing and only a foggy idea of how the English language is written. These cars are Minis. At least that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
