Rough Idle When I remove oil cap

Hello fellow mini'ers,
I recently have been having trouble with my cooper s, i had to replace my thermostat housing twice. Originally I thought i had a blown head gasket because when i remove my oil fill cap while the car is running it seems to choke and rough idle and will die if it is off long enough, although i haven't left it off long enough to let it die. Basically I'm asking if this is normal or not, from the little mechanical information i know, this does not seem to be normal or correct. If anybody has any insight or advice for me that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Normal. YouTube has several videos of this.

2nd the normal.. basically you are causing an intake leak due to the PCV setup.

A bad head gasket won't do that.. you would be losing coolant, burning it, misfire, etc.. if you had a bad head gasket.

Hello from a fellow Michigan'der representing Bloomfield Township

Like the previous poster said, opening the oil cap essentially shifts the intake vacuum to atmospheric pressure and you'll get a VERY rough and stubly idle.

Perhaps we'll see you at the Michigan MINI Motoring Club planning event next Saturday. It's a Motor City MINI.
