Slight burning smell after hard driving

Hello all, 2013 MCS, 12k

I live in Chicago where it's flat, so while visiting relatives in PA for Christmas went for a good romp on the curvy mountain road about a mile from their house.

Had a slight burning smell when I turned around to come back and after I parked.

I noticed a slight sizzling/gurgling sound near the turbo after parking so I turned it back on a let idle a few minutes. (This is advisable for turbo cooling, yes?)

Normal?

Its common to smell something odd after driving hard, you are getting the engine, turbo, and exhaust hotter than it normally gets. Doing this burns off any accumulated oil and dirt from those hot pieces.

It is a good idea to drive easy for a mile or two after a hard run. This allows the oil and coolant to help cool down any hot spots, and the air going under and around the engine helps cool better than just letting it idle.

By driving to allow some cool down you will also reduce the chances of warping the hood scoop. This seems to be a less common problem with newer cars (I have read fewer new complaints), but is still a good idea.

Have fun,
Mike

Also with the 2013, put it in sport mode for the last part of the drive (if you didn't have it sport already). The cooling fan kicks in and brings the coolant from 220F to 180F.

Thanks for all the info. I did have it in sport for the whole trip, (lol) but I didn't know that about sport mode.

It was by far the hardest it's been driven since bought at 10k in October. And it's only been on a short trip around town since an about 600 mile trip last week, so the idea of burning off road grime sounds plausible.

Sport mode, all day long. I don't like the car staying at 220F.

Bet it was one of the first times the car got hot....so you smelled it bit...just like a new car...the paint and rubber and oil smells of stuff on a newer car getting hot. I would not worry.
