The best length is the one that accommodates the stuff you're carrying. Golf clubs? Skis?

Chrunck has it right — depends what you carry. If skis, you'll want one of Thule's Alpine sizes — longer and narrower than the others.

My wife just got a 2014 Countryman S last week. We got MINI's roof box. It's not ski length but that's no problem for us. The thing is just cavernous! Quiet, too.

i plastidipped stripes onto mine. i think they're a little too narrow, i'll thicken them up when i restripe the car. can't say i've seen many striped boxes around.

there's a post with 5 or 6 different types of boxes from a little over a year ago i remember posting in, dig thru my old posts for the thread. since then thule released their new line of boxes, they have a much sleeker look than their older style, but i haven't seen any topping a mini yet.

Nice - was thinking of stripping my ski box too, but have been lazy...

Can't agree enough with above re: the box should meet your needs. We have the MINI-branded box, and my observations are:
  1. Pretty generous/volumous considering the size
  2. Narrow enough to also have other attachments on the rack - for us, we can have two bikes on the roof with the box
  3. Long enough for my XC skate skis, but not long enough for classic skis

Here are some pics:

Does a roof cargo box nullify the panoramic roof windows? My wife claims it would detract from using the panoramic window, even though I want one to pack for our x-country MTTS 2014 tour

Thanks

Well, clearly the view is obscured, but the glass still opens and closes without problems...

Not my car but same box, it's a Thule Dynamic 800, the 900 model is too long, it's very quiet, a lot quieter than most other Thule boxes.

I have Thule Excursion 667ES on my Cooper S.

It is bit big but it fits and doesn't have any problem with antenna or door.
Just which I bought a smaller one.
