AM radio reception greatly reduced....

Hey Gang,
I have a 2007 MCS with aftermarket shortened antenna.

My radio (FM & AM) was working fine on Friday....but, yesterday the AM reception is GREATLY reduce.

FM is still working fine.

The shortened antenna was installed ~ 1 year ago and never gave me any problems.

Any idea?

AM is picky about antenna length, FM not so much. Unscrew antenna, clean threads, reattach..

I had a similar problem on my old GTI. There's an RF amp incorporated in that antenna, and it may have failed.

I tried cleaning the threads and not help.

Also, re-installed the original antenna (which was working when removed) and still no-go....

Truly mind-boggling!

My '08 had the same symptoms. It needed a new antenna roof module (the thing that the antenna screws into). You have to remove the headliner to get at it. All good since then. Mine was fixed under warranty so I can't tell you how much it cost.
