R50/53 Stake (peen) your axle nuts!
Stake (peen) your axle nuts!
I know this may be common sense to most of you but after starting to hear a noise from my passenger front end when turning left (and seeing my instruments light up like a Christmas tree,) I went to take the wheel off to see what was going on only to realize that the axle nut worked its way completely off the CV axle because someone hadn't staked it into place.
So a word of caution to those who think by just torquing to spec (which it had been) would stop the nut from working its way loose. Don't be lazy and skip it and don't be cheap and not replace it. If you're looking to save you can cheat by reusing the old one and staking it on a different spot but if you can't determine whether you should or shouldn't reuse it, then replace it. Yes, the one nut is over $10, but it's your ride and your life on the line.
