Removing chrome tail light trim?

I want to remove the chrome rings around the tail lights to black them out and re-install the afterwards. Has anyone taken theirs off? It looks like they should snap off, but I hate to start pulling if I don't know for sure. Since I'm going to put them back, I can't break them.

the light has to be removed. it's a PITA. there's a few walkthru's around on how to remove the lights then reinstall them correctly.

remove the 2 grates on the inside of the boot. Then you can loosen and remove the nuts that hold the lights in and then you can remove the trim rings. Caution...there is not a lot of slack in the wires.

See this thread for some pics and detailed instructions.

You don't need to worry about the wires. They disconnect really easily. I took my tail lights to the workbench to remove the rings.
