Drivetrain chain timing problem
chain timing problem
hi.
i'm new on forum and i just bought a mini cooper, i'm from rio de janeiro, so pardon me for my bad english.
i have searched here and on youtube for the death rattle problem, but i cant distinguish between the normal sound the death sound.
i think my cooper has the problem, it makes a diesel engine sound, dealer here doesnt know that mini has that problem.
please, can you guys check my video bellow and tell me if i have chain problem? it was the first startup in the morning, 24C, my cooper S 2009 has 17k miles or 27k km.
thanks in advance.

Hello, that´s the standard THP Prince engine. (Peugeot-BMW)
Higher noise when cold, then starts to silent down.
High pressure fuel pump + high pressure fuel injectors + not very well designed timing chain tensioner = very noisy engine.
The problem is if the engine makes a very high noise when hot (ratatat-ratatat..), sign of a faulty timing chain guides and stretched chain.
Keep the oil at fuel level ALWAYS.
The thinner the oil, the better (fills the timing chain tensioner sooner). 5w30 or 0w40.
Never, I mean NEVER, use thicker oils.
Here in Buenos Aires with colder temperatures I use 0w30, thin like Vaseline !
Rio, Cidade Maravillosa !
