How can I monitor the AFR?

What are my options for monitoring the AFR (Air Fuel Ratio) on my mini? Will the Scangauge II do it? What about a separate gauge dedicated in AFR? I would like to keep an eye on the AFR while doing mods to make sure the motor is running to lean....don't want to melt anything down.

Any info would be great.

Thanks

Install a dedicated sensor and gauge.... Most common spot is in the header so it is pre-cat.

A kit like this.

http://www.aemelectronics.com/wideba...fuel-gauge-25/

That is, if you want to do things right.. And not just get a light up gauge that ties into the factory o2.

This.
IQR, I saw in another thread that you were asking about Bytetronik tuning options, one of the Innovative kits is a part of the Bytetronik tuning options.

On a gen1 the o2 IS NOT WIDEBAND....
The ONLY info to the computer it provides is too lean/OK/too rich in a narrow voltage range...it does not provide enough info for afr's....that is why they clip one on at the dyno....

That is along the lines of what you want...most folks that use them have onboard tuning..if you have a self tune kit, afr imo is 100% needed..for dsily driving, look at the color of the soot on you exhaust pipes will give you a clue to the richness of the wfr....usually it is OK in a mini till you get a header/can....by then you WANT/NEED a tune anyway (unless you have a 19%, wot).
Then again....a decent guage always looks nice...more info the better!!

He did say if you want to do things right and not tie in the stock AF sensor wires... The Uego comes with it's own A/F sensor and all the wires required, I have one sitting here waiting for my complete exhaust setup to be installed.

The stock O2 sensor is a narrow band sensor....it's not going to work for you. Just buy one of the AFR gauge kits that come with the Bosch wide band O2 sensor.....then you will be good to go.

The R53 MINI uses a narrow band sensor....you can't monitor AFR with that. Some cars use wide band sensors.....you can use those to monitor AFR with dashcommand and other apps.

For the R53 mini.....the only option is to buy an ARF gauge with wide band O2 sensor.

Sorry I was talking about R56 mini. Not about R53.
My mistake.

All from the same thread.

You can NOT use the factory upstream O2 sensor for accurate monitoring. It's ONLY for the ECU to adjust itself on the fly. The secondary O2 is just a nanny aid to ensure the Catalytic converter is working correctly.

The ONLY way to properly monitor AFRs is to install an aftermarket Wideband O2 sensor, all associated wiring, and a gauge to read said data output. Anybody saying otherwise is doing it wrong.

Now to actually give a suggestion: https://www.ebay.com/p/Innovate-Lc1-Wideband-O2-DB-52mm-Kit-Red-Gauge-Display-Lc-1-Tuner-Combo/6008549499?iid=273198160092&chn=ps

Innovative LC1. Cheap by comparison and I've never read about folks being let down by them.

Edit: I guess the LC2 is out now, and it retails for $220 with sensor. https://www.innovatemotorsports.com/...cat=262&page=1

So I have the AEM wideband installed in my 2006 mini cooper S..this was installed when I got the car a year ago...now my question is, is my car loosing power with a check engine light being on for that upstream narrow band o2 sensor being removed and the wideband AEM installed? Should I remove that wideband o2 and replace a narrow band so my edu can read air fuel correctly....my car is not tuned as far as I know..I have 17% pulley with cold plugs and Megan header with decat I installed... At runs great idles fine and all I just think I may be loosing gas mileage if anything? Any help would be great thanks..

Aem wideband in 2006 R53?

So I bought car with AEM Wideband installed a year and a half ago. I have a check engine light of course cause of the wideband replacing the stock o2 sensor and not being plugged into ecu I guess..my question is am I losing power? Or maybe just gas milage? Car idles at 1490 give or take and seems to run great. Any help would be great...should I take this out and install stock o2 back to original way?

Probably both.
1490 rpm is an really high idle for this engine, so it's most likely making the maximum corrections allowed in the software to compensate for the lack of data from the missing O2 sensor.

I take it you have a gauge for the Wideband since our ECU's won't recognize the signal.
So just do yourself a favor, have another bung installed for the wideband (welded or strapped) and replace the missing O2 sensor. Everything will work much better.

Something is wrong if your car is idling that high...vacuum leak?

You replaced the stock O2 with a wideband sensor....and didn't plug it into the factory harness?? Yeah, that's not good. How is your motors getting the correct AFR??

You should have left the factory O2 alone....and added another port in the exhaust for the wideband O2. Don't drive your car until you get the factory short bad O2 hooked back up.

Wow....
