Replacement Key - 2007 Mini Cooper R56

Hey Guys,

Has anyone had any look getting replacement key fobs from anyone other than the dealer?

I have found various ones on ebay both used and new and programmed and not. Can these keys be cut and programmed anywhere else? All the locksmiths I've currently spoken to either won't do it or say they can't. Dealer wants over 300$+ to order one precut and programmed from MINI.

Here is the one I am speaking about

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MINI-BRAND-NEW-VIRGIN-CHIP-KEYLESS-ENTRY-TRANSPONDER-KEY-REMOTE-TRANSMITTER-FOB-/280764807445?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A2007%7CModel%3ACooper&hash=item415ee2f915&vxp=mtr

Hopefully I haven't been wasting time and this can be done. I could use a second key for family member and just in case the other is lost. I can't afford 300$+ for a key.

Appreciate any help avaliable!

Thanks

Unfortunately if you have an R56 the only way to get a replacement key is from the dealer. The key in your description looks like it's from a 1st gen mini. If your key looks like a hockey puck than you do drive an R56. I purchased my R56 used and unfortunately only received one key. The replacement key cost 180 bucks (I don't have comfort access). If you do have comfort access your key will cost around 280 bucks. There is no way to reprogram R56 keys. The replacement key is generated from your VIN number and unique to that car.
