Short Shifter Mod

I noticed that Bluetoy did the Short Shifter mod. I think that is going to be my mid March project.

Looks like I'm going to order the NM Engineering Adapter and cover.

Has anyone else done this mod? How do you like it? Any installation tips?

Now for the Shift ****.

Here is my interior

It was Bluetoy that got me thinking about this. I'm not sure about the Carbon Fiber look, though I do like the BMW **** that he picked.

What do you guys think about these two or do you have a suggestion that would match my interior better.

I personally liek the Crave shift *****. The theme in my R56 was a more industrial look wiith lots of metal. For yours, I like the black leather one. The important thins is to do what YOU like.

I vote for the Briar wood because I think it would go well with your upholstery.

If you're really undecided, get both and swap them every month or so.

Why NM and not Helix? The Helix gives a shorter throw and retains shift height. I just recently added the Helix SSK and NM cover. I love it.

I did the NM short shifter and cover. I was replacing my exhaust with an Akrapovic and was an easy install with the exhaust removed. Getting the shifter cable to pop off the stock shifter was alittle difficult. I like it a lot and can't even remember what stock was like.

Hi Melangell,

Good question, I was up and down about whether to buy the Helix or the NM they are the same thing, and the Helix is cheaper... I guess I like how nice the NM looks, even though no one will see it, but me. NM also has a nice site and their install instructions looked very clear, so I decided to spend the little extra money to support that effort. I like to spread my mod $$ around. Maybe It's just easier to say my SSK mod is from NM.

I had a hard time with picking vendor to purchase from too, in the end I went with Way Motors Work, maybe because I've seen them on the web site a few times in the last few days and thought it's nice to see the vendor on the site.

Anyway I can't wait for March and a little warmer weather to install it.

I never thought of that, interesting (Honey I need a different one depending on my mood... not sure how that will be received!#*

My kid likes the leather one.

That's 2 for leather and one Briar wood, more votes please..

Wow... I feel chastened a bit since I usually harp on people who cheap out on mods. As you can see below I am no stranger to NM. As I said above, I did use the NM Shifter Assembly Box Cover (can't fit it on signature line). As a matter of fact just last week I was talking to Jerry T at NM about tuning my ECU and admitted to the Helix SSK. He forgave me. If you ever have a question about anything NM, call them and ask for Jerry. Great guy. You can't go wrong with Way either. I have bought most of my stuff from him and he has installed most of the hard stuff.

Melangell,

Great to know.

Thanks for asking, I really didn't think about it until you asked...

Finally had the Short Shift Kit installed by Greasy's Garage in Worcester MA yesterday.

My youngest son was more than happy to take the car in for the install (Perfect Day!!) while I was at work.

Just in time for MINI's On Top.

Thanks Richwagner for the tip...

Thanks Greasy's,

Andy

Had it and personally feel it is the best ssk for the R56; besides the CAE shifter

What's CAE? Does the Crave allow you to lower the shifter? Or will you have to cut the shaft & rethread

CAE, racing shifter.

http://www.shop.cae-racing.de/index....8&lang=eng

With the craven ssk it has a locking collar. Unlock it and you can adjust to a height however you desire and when it's set, just tighten it back up and you're good to go. No cutting or anything. I do recommend getting the NM shift box or DIY one which isn't very hard to do either.

Exhaust has to come off so that'll be the longest bit in this installation process.

Awesome, glad you got it installed in time. How is the new short shifting? Big difference?

Thanks for the info on CAE, but that's just too racer for me & way too tall for street use. Why do you recommend the NM shift box? The Craven looks good, how does that fair?

Craven is fantastic. One day I can drive it at it's lowest point and the next I'll adjust it to stock height based on however I feel that day. At the track I stick with stock height, DD I go low as possible. You'll want the NM shift box because the extended ball linkage sits below the cover line. The box allows the linkage to move freely. At the stock height you won't feel or have any issues, but when you adjust it lower you will feel the linkage touching. Whether you go with the Craven, Helix, or NM, they will all require a modified shift assembly box.

Cnyilas,

Greasy's quoted 1hr to install.

My son said they got it done in 1/2 an hour so it was half their hourly labor rate.
