Turbo Lag vs. Serious hesitation

I've purchased a new to me 2010 MCS hardtop with 20k miles. Pressing the accelerator from stop gives a considerable hesitation before acceleration. Pressing the sport button does improve it considerably, however the throttle is much higher and the shift points (both up and down) are more annoying.

I am concerned their may be an issue here. I also believe the cold rattle may exist as well. Just wanted to get a sense of how pronounced the Mini's turbo lag is. Reading online, it is not supposed to be very pronounced. It certainly is right now.

It sounds like there's more than there should be, I don't notice a great deal of lag unless you slightly push on the gas and let the rpms build up really slow. If you get on the gas pretty hard from a stand still do you get the same amount of hesitation?

Interesting... I wonder if manual vs. auto plays into it. I have the step tonic auto. Thanks for the replies. Anyone else have an insight?

A MINI has such a small turbo, should have basically ZERO lag. unless it has been modified to a MUCH BIGGER aftermarket unit....

It hesitates from a complete stop or a rolling stop? Reason I ask is that my auto transmission doesn't seem to go into first unless I'm completely stopped, or maybe going 1 or 2 mph, no more. Other than that, it starts in second. Sport mode alleviates this condition.

One of the most annoying things about the MINI to me is the hesitation/delay in the throttle. My car is an auto (as was the justa before it), and I can duplicate the situation that you have described. Basically, the throttle is electronic, and there is a built-in delay time. The sport mode reduces the delay time, as well as increases the rate of throttle opening. There are products that eliminate/reduce the delay (sprint booster), and this is one of the things that my Accessport helped with a bunch.

I don't think it is turbo lag, just a delay in response to throttle input. Other than being annoying, there is nothing to worry about.

Mike
