I have a 2008 Mini Cooper S with MINI HiFi sound System (NO Navigation) and the USB/iPOD adapter. I have an iPod Touch 4th Generation with iOS 5.0.
I purchased a cheap Chinese knockoff of the Ipod to USB/Aux Y cable, but never could use the radio controls to actually control the iPod. I have even used the original Apple cable and doesn’t really do anything.

If I purchase the $60 + BMW cable (Part # 61120440812), would I be able to control my iPod over the radio and have it charge as well?

I had a problem with the USB/Aux port and last year and Mini Service changed out the part. I need to find the receipts to see what part number they replaced it with.

 

My 2008 S is configured the same and I bought the eBay Y-cable on the cheap to use with an older older iPod and have had no issues with it. I believe that the instructions say to plug the cable in first, start the car, then add the device. IIRC.

 

I have done as the instructions say, but when I try to change to USB it says Load or Empty and stays in the current audio source.
BMW Service replaced the part last year with this one:
84-10-9-237-653 USB/AUX-IN Socket: 61309931AC
I had the part replaced, because sometimes it wouldn't recognize the Aux.

I also have a Ipod Touch 1st Gen and does the same.
