Seats: Replaced or reupholstered?

My 06 Cooper is getting a case of tired seats.

I'd like to know if anyone here has had their seats replaced with aftermarket seats or if anyone has had their factory seats reupholstered?

I'm not interested in seat covers.

My passenger airbag sensor is dead so I've been staring at that light for years. Won't break my heart to lose the side airbags either way.

I should be able to have just the seat portion of the seats redone since the backs are still in fine shape.

Any experiences you can share will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I have take the seat bottom off and put it back on without problems. Maybe find a set of lightly used seats and do it your self. That would also get you the sensor.

Why lose the side airbags? Have a friend who was T-boned in the driver's door by a truck that ran a red light doing ~50 mph. The side airbag probably saved his life.

I'll check it out for sure.

Would still love to hear some experiences from anyone out there who has crossed this bridge before.

Thanks.

I had spoken to an upholsterer about having the seats re-covered and he wouldn't do it because he didn't have the appropriate break-away thread for the airbags. I'd be surprised if you could find somebody who would agree to re-cover your seats without the appropriate accommodations for the airbags.

You could always try a company like Katzkin who makes actual replacement skins. (IE, not a cover, actually replaces whatever covers your seats) I just haven't seen it installed in a MINI before. This will probably be a cheaper route than buying the replacement skins from the dealer.

You can reupholster if you can't find any used. Or go aftermarket Recaro, Sparco, Bride, etc. Peek over at minitorque if you wanna see cool MINIs the other side of the pond. Many have gotten rid of the airbag & light. 3.9 ohm Resistors plugged in those sockets, if I'm not mistaken. Then, reset the light. Weigh the risks of not having seat bags function.
