R50/53 Key fob "wings" that unlock the car
A new key is about $200....
if you get a used key or ebay blank, transfer the electronics and the shaft, battery, and imoblizer chip....and it will look new!!
The keys are not made to open...but folks have done it if careful.

The clamshell style keys that came with the first generation, pre-refresh models are made to be opened as there is a replaceable lithium battery in there. The "flat" style keys that came with the refreshed cars are not made to be opened, as far as I know.
Replacement clamshell key cases are readily available on eBay. At least one style includes the 'wings' in unattached fashion, which means you could just stick it on your existing key, but it's not that hard to transfer your remote board and immobilizer chip to the new case, along with your cut blade. At some point the rubber button parts of your existing case will start to break down, so transferring the components now might make sense.
