R56 Mini-Generator
Mini-Generator
So, I'm in NJ without power. Looked at a generator in the Home Despot about a week ago and said, 'nahhh'. Doh!
But I have a Mini (2009 S), and a 300W power convertor connected to the Cigarette lighter.
Running a lamp, a fan on the fireplace, and charging a few items.
It's been purring in the garage all day (yes, the door is open), giving me juice. The gas gauge hasn't moved yet.
Might be a dumb question but, any issue with letting it idle for 8 hours?
I really don't think so, but thought I'd ask anyways.
Thanks,
Val

Thanks, been checking that. The electric fan kicks in every once in a while, but as it's about 40 out, I think it's doing ok.
Finally saw one light go out on the gas gauge.
Note: Don't try to connect a refrigerator to one of these convertors. Was pretty sure it wouldn't work, and figured on a blowing a fuse. I was right. 20amp Fuse #29 in the passenger fuse compartment.

Couple of things...
First, you take a chance at killing your motor as the oil pressure will be minimal. Not a good idea. You are also putting heavy duty on your fan thus cutting its life.
Secondly, running motors on those converters is also asking for a fire. They are not designed for high duty cycles, only minor things.
