R50/53 Service questions

Hi all ...
Looking for some opinions ... is it imperative to take one's MINI to the dealer for service?
With my old Jeep Cherokee, I would just take it to the 76 by my office; they always did a good job and for far less money than the dealer.
Can a gas/service station get the software for the car, just like ordering another part?
Another option is one of those independent places that just services German cars (usually called something like Hermann ze German's Autowerks :smile: ... what do y'all think of those?

You should have 3 years free maintenance and a four year warranty on your MINI. I doubt if one of the great independent shops you know of can do work for less than nothing.
However, you may want to find a place like this for when your warranty has expired. MINI non-warranty service is pretty expensive. By then, any good indie shop should have or be able to get any MINI part or manual that they're require.

For all work that might be covered under the first three years of warranty I would suggest taking your MINI to the dealership because it is covered and sometimes there are minor recalls that they might be able to help you with.
And oil and filter change and new wiper refill blades are common at about 12,000 miles and again at about 26,000 miles. These are covered as are any routine maintenance/checking of fluids, etc.
If you want to change oil early or at roughly 3,000 to 6,000 miles intervals then the extra changes can be done at your shop. You can purchase the oil filter and O-ring and synthetic oil yourself to save money and have the shop do the labor only.
