Drivetrain Whine
Drivetrain Whine
I have a 2011 CMS 2WD auto trans with about 28K miles, and am hearing a very distinct whine in the drivetrain when coasting downhill. This started faintly around 22K or so, and has gradually gotten louder and louder. At first, it was heard only on smooth roads when the radio was silenced, now I can hear it on noisier roads even if the radio is playing at normal listening volume.
This is not in the tires, I replaced the OEM tires about 1.5K miles ago with no change in the whine. If I am driving with my foot on the accelerator, I do not hear it; if I let up on the accelerator when the car is going down hill, even slightly, I hear the whine and so do passengers. I can't tell if it is from the transmission or somewhere else in the drivetrain. Is this a sign of trouble coming, or is it normal? Thanks for your thoughts.

No, not resolved yet. I have an appointment tomorrow for an oil change and brakes, and I plan to bring the whine issue up then. I'm assuming the lack of response to my post means the whine is not characteristic of MINI, so I want to get it checked out. I will post the outcome.
Update:
My dealer has agreed they can hear an unusual whine, but have not isolated its' source yet. They are going to keep the car at least 3 more days because they have engaged the factory rep and have to take the more things apart. Fortunately, I have a loaner car.

The saga continues. The dealer and the factory found that the whine is coming from the transmission. Get this. . . the factory wants to inspect the transmission, so they are sending a new one for trade and replacement. Shipment from Germany will take at least 10 days. I'm glad this problem showed up now rather than after warranty ($$$!). The dealer put my Countryman back together and said it is safe to drive in the meantime. Fine with me.
I sure tip my hat to the Dealer, this was a very subtle problem. They got on top of this and kept me well informed.
