05 Cooper S engine noise - PSP or crank pulley?
Been having some issues with the power steering pump on the mini lately. It is an 05 S with 105k. The pump has been whining excessively and sometimes takes a minute or two to shut off after the car turns off. Well, the other day when pulling out of a lot the car goes into limp mode. SES and EML light come on. I immediately pull back in and shut the car off. I pop the hood to find some smoke coming out and it appeared a small amount of fluid had leaked down on the passenger side near the belt/pulleys.
I start the car back up and all seems fine. I was not far from home so I decided to try to make it back. On the way back this squeaking/squealing noise coming from the passenger side progressively was getting worse. It is also worse the higher the rpm.
I got a scanner hooked up to the car and it pulled the P1688(I believe that was it) which I read was a mini specific code and usually indicated BPV or crank pulley. I'm thinking crank pulley because of the odd noise.
I have attached a Youtube video below of the noise. Basically, I wish it was just the power steering pump that was my problem, but after some reading it sounds like I'm going to be replacing it and the crank pulley. Does anyone have any input on this?
Also, has anyone used any of the non-dampened crank pulleys without issues or should those be avoided?
Here is a link to the Youtube video:
Thanks for all of your help.

are you talking about the squeak...squeak....squeak?
interesting mine has just developed that too but im closing in on 128K but i feel like mine goes away after awhile or i just tune it out.... ill try and pay more attention to it and see if i can target it with a stethoscope

does your battery light come on while the car is running? If so take a good look at the pulley or under the car and look for small rubber bits flying around. Do you smell a faint smell of burning rubber?
Signs of a bad crank pulley....
Signs of a bad crank pulley....
Smoke might be from the belt getting oil on it....so you will likly need a new one...next, look at you upper motor mount....sounds like it failed...dripping some oil.
Tge harmonic damper MAY have failed....
They tend to slip a bit then go...the rubber cracks and fatigue....then bang...no sc, alternator, ac or waterpump...
so car is immobile.
If you take off the right side (pax) tire, then remove the wheel well liner, you can see the damper pulley and the belt...you will need to do this anyway to remove the belt to replace it if it is just wet with oil....the replacent pulley is about $300-350....you need a puller, and it is best done in a garage with tools, but can be done in a home shop diy....
