Glass fell out of favor with most makers in the late 80's....
weight and the advances in plastics and molding....not to mention $$$.
Modern plastic headlights do need a bit of care...heck when new i put protective coatings on mine....now 7 years later, still clear.
On the wifes Toyoda, i did not...
But a polish/buff every couple of years has kept the hazing/yellowing in check.

Euro lenses on the mk4s were glass...but the oem North American spec GTI lenses were in fact plastic. Some aftermarket companies ie: Valeo and Hella made glass lenses for the mk4...I don't think they made any for the cooper though

Going back to many honda cars like civics, glass was used in 88', but then switched to plastic in 89'....the glass ones fit the same gen cars for another 3 years...
In the mini, i'm betting money they were always plollycarbonite from the start....heck look at the shapes...i doubt they were even possible to make in glass.....that and add about 5x the eeight to the cornor of the car.....
The best protection i have found is clear plastic covers...go on like a clear bra...but MUCH thicker....precut to fit the headlights. Will keep the oem headlights looking like new indefinitely.
