Ok so the particular complaint is in regard to the R50 about the power steering pump failing because it was bad design. Not saying it was anyone on this forum but, it was most likely misinformed people that ignored the problem till it failed. Instead of talking with MINI they went straight to the NHSTA thinking they would get a free fix. This list does not apply to the R56 what so ever and is just statistics. Less MINIs so it doesn't take a lot of complaints to make it look like it seem that it is plagued with problems.
Normailized over 100,000 cars, which is fair, I suppose. And then, not all clientele of all makes/models may be apt to b_tch about stuff to the same degree.
Power steering failures are no joke, of course, or engine fires. Although with power steering failures, I cringe at ones that say "resulting in no ability to steer the vehicle".
But a perusing of the source data (it's online, a gummint database) reveals some darned odd "safety" complaints.
E.g. for the Mazda 5 ( I have one), a reported "safety defect" consisted of this: this model's instruments, behind a tinted plastic cover, are always illuminated, even in daylight with the lights "off". The reported safety "defect" was that since this is the case, the driver will believe their headlights are "on" when they're off, since the dash lights are illuminated. Causing them to drive down the road with no headlights, how dangerous!
Of course, there's a separate indicator light (glows green) when the headlights are on. Didn't matter. Someone still reported this "defect", so +1 for this make/model.
I haven't read through the MINI's complaints.
