An IB/MCS will be my first new car, arriving in May. The owners manual says to avoid constant speeds for the first 1,500 [?] miles.
1. Does that mean I can't just take the car right out of the box and do a road trip from the bay area to Yellowstone Nat'l Park?
2. Or commute daily for that matter 30 miles at 80 m.p.h.?

Just keep shifting gears 4th 5th 6th while cruising down the freeway. That way Engine RPM isn't being held constant for long periods of time.

An inportant part of 'break-in' is operating temp change.

Just driving for a straight 1,250 miles does not fully break-in the car. It needs to go from 'room temp' to 'operating temp' and back to 'room temp'.

There's also a max RPM and speed limit during the break-in period.

Say what?
Don't you know that you'll slosh your
slurpy at those speeds?

Godspeed.

Go on your road trip and have a blast. I drove mine about 1000 miles on its first weekend and I varied my rpm's on highways but also had some fun and did not stick to the break-in rules.

After a few hundred miles, I began to push the engine harder and drove it the way I wanted it to drive it for the rest of its life. I went ahead and did short hard accellerations onto freeway ramps, and played with its accellertion from a stop.

Modern engines are built in a much more precise way than engines were 50 years ago before computers ran the machine shop.

>>Say what? I know, CooperBeagle, it's dangerous to not go WITH the flow of traffic, but 85 m.p.h. is just out of control along 280. I'm a bay area wimp, so I keep it mellow and to the right, know what I mean???
